At Pratt & Whitney, the pursuit of more sustainable aviation is foundational. For decades, we’ve been at the forefront of revolutionary advancements in aircraft propulsion technology. And by working smarter, cleaner, greener, today, we’re committed to supporting our industry in its goal of reaching net zero aviation CO2 emissions by 2050.
How will we get to Net Zero by 2050?
Smarter Technology
Sustainable aviation hinges on our relentless pursuit of technologies that improve aircraft efficiency, to reduce fuel burn and emissions. From ultra-efficient turboprops to the revolutionary family of GTF engines for single-aisle aircraft, we’re continually raising the bar for efficiency and performance.
Explore how we’ll go even further within advanced materials and disruptive engine architectures like hybrid-electric propulsion.
Cleaner Fuel
Reducing our dependence on fossil-based fuels is of central importance to achieving net zero CO2 emissions for aviation by 2050. So we are advancing the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) – through extensive work on testing and certification – while developing technologies for zero carbon, alternative fuels, like hydrogen.
Greener Business
A greener world needs greener business. We are continuously committed to reducing the environmental footprint of our operations and facilities, through various energy, emissions and waste reduction initiatives.
The Road to Net Zero Emissions by 2050
The ambition to ‘fly net zero’ is at the core of our industry’s challenge. Pratt & Whitney is committed to supporting its customers achieve the industry-wide commitment of net zero air transport CO2 emissions by 2050. Getting there will take a range of measures, including the smarter technologies and cleaner fuels we are driving forward.
Carbon offset service
Our journey to net zero will also be aided by market-based measures, including carbon offsetting tools. That’s why we chose to launch a Carbon Offset Service for our Pratt & Whitney Canada business jet, general and regional aircraft and helicopter customers – the first service of its kind to be offered by an engine maker.

Partnering for Sustainable Aviation
The scale of sustainability requires close coordination between industry and government organizations, suppliers and customers. Pratt & Whitney is an active partner with key organizations working towards net zero:
The Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) is an independent coalition of member organizations and companies throughout the global air transport industry. As a founding member, Pratt & Whitney is set to achieve net zero air transport carbon emissions by 2050.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is funded and directed by 193 national governments to support diplomacy and cooperation.
The Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI) is the principal advocacy group for sustainable aviation fuels.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the trade association for the world’s airlines, shaping a sustainable air transport industry.
The International Aerospace Environmental Group (IAEG) is a non-profit organization to create innovative environmental solutions for the industry.
The Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association (AFRA) is the leading international association representing the aircraft recycling industry.
